Cobalt Chrome Ring Info

Cobalt chrome doesn't get enough credit.

Most men shopping for a white metal ring end up looking at white gold, platinum, or tungsten. Cobalt chrome belongs in that conversation — and in several ways, it wins it.

What Is Cobalt Chrome?

Cobalt chromium is a metal alloy originally developed for medical and aerospace applications — joint replacements, turbine blades, surgical instruments. Industries where failure isn't an option demanded something tougher than gold and more biocompatible than stainless steel. That's cobalt chrome.

In ring form, it's dense, bright, and built to last in a way that white gold simply isn't.

Cobalt Chrome vs. Tungsten

The comparison that comes up most. Here's the honest breakdown:

Tungsten

  • Highest scratch resistance of any ring metal
  • Extremely brittle — shatters under impact rather than bending
  • Requires specialized equipment to remove in emergencies
  • Heavier feel; no flex or give

Cobalt Chrome

  • Near-tungsten scratch resistance in everyday wear
  • Tougher — absorbs impact without cracking
  • Easier to remove in a medical emergency
  • Substantial weight that feels solid, not cumbersome
For active guys or anyone working with their hands, the toughness difference matters. A ring that shatters under pressure is a different problem than one that bends.

Weight-wise, cobalt chrome sits between titanium and tungsten — heavier than most men expect the first time they hold one, in a way that feels substantial rather than cumbersome.

Is Cobalt Chrome Hypoallergenic?

Mostly, but not entirely. Our cobalt chrome contains approximately 9% nickel — lower than most white gold alloys, but not zero. For the majority of wearers this isn't an issue, and cobalt chrome is still widely regarded as a skin-friendly metal. But if you have a confirmed nickel sensitivity, it's worth knowing.

If you've had reactions to white gold or cheaper alloys in the past, cobalt chrome may still be a better option — but we'd recommend checking with your dermatologist if you have a known nickel allergy before ordering.

How It Wears

The bright white finish of cobalt chrome holds longer than white gold, which requires rhodium plating to maintain its color. Cobalt chrome's finish is the metal itself — it doesn't wear away or require replating.

Day one

Bright white polish, sharp edges, factory finish. Looks like the catalog photo.

Years of wear

Develops a natural patina — a slight satin quality from everyday contact. Many men prefer this to the artificial shine of a brand-new ring.

Anytime

If you want to restore the original polish, it can be buffed back. No replating, no maintenance fees — just a polish.
