An inlay is a strip of a second material set into a channel cut in the band, and it is the single fastest way to make a ring look like yours and no one else's. The most requested inlays at Revolution are genuine Gibeon meteorite, solid gold, agatized dinosaur bone, carbon fiber, and mokume gane. Any of them can sit in the center of the band, off center, or along one side, in widths starting as narrow as 1 mm. Here is what each one actually is and how to pick the one that fits you.

A ring inlay is a band of one material seated into a groove machined into another. The metal band does the structural work. The inlay does the talking.
That division of labor is the whole point. Several of the most striking materials on earth are too brittle or too porous to survive as a full ring, but they hold up beautifully as a thin layer supported by titanium, black zirconium, Damascus steel, cobalt chrome, or gold. An inlay is how you get to wear them without babying them.
Meteorite is the most requested inlay, and it earns it. Every meteorite ring at Revolution uses genuine Gibeon meteorite, an iron and nickel material that formed roughly four billion years ago and was recovered from the Namibian desert.
What you actually see on the finger is the Widmanstätten pattern, a crosshatch of intersecting crystalline bands revealed when the metal is cut, polished, and etched. It only forms at a cooling rate of about one degree Celsius per million years, which is why it cannot be reproduced in a lab. If the pattern is there, the material is real.
One thing worth knowing before you commit: meteorite contains nickel. Most people never react, but if you have a known nickel sensitivity, say so early and there are better options for you. Full details live on the meteorite ring info page.
A gold inlay is the fastest way to make a modern ring look expensive without making it look fussy. It is available in yellow, white, and rose, and it is the one inlay that everyone in the room recognizes on sight.
The combination that has quietly taken over is gold against a dark band. A thin yellow gold stripe running through black zirconium or black titanium gives you high contrast in a low key ring, and it reads as deliberate rather than flashy. If you want one detail on the ring to carry real weight, this is the one to spend it on. Start with black and gold bands or browse everything in the rings with gold collection.
Dinosaur bone inlays use agatized fossil, which is bone whose original structure has been remineralized with silica compounds such as agate, jasper, and chalcedony. The material dates to the late Jurassic, roughly 150 million years ago, and the gem grade stone comes from the Four Corners region where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado meet.
Fossil is rock, and rock chips under direct impact, so the material is set as a crushed mosaic rather than a single slab, then sealed with medical grade resin and sanded flush. The result is glossy and continuous to the eye but far tougher than a solid piece would be. Because every batch carries different trace minerals, no two rings share a pattern. Carbon fiber is the lightest inlay on the list, roughly twelve times lighter than gold, and it comes in three distinct versions that look nothing alike.
Inlays run about 2 to 3 mm thick. Forged is also the most flexible of the three: it works as an exterior inlay or as a full interior sleeve, which hides the pattern until you take the ring off. Start with the forged carbon fiber collection to see the marbling.
Mokume gane is the option for anyone who wants pattern without wanting a story attached to it. Layers of different metals are bonded together and then cut into, so the exposed layers form a flowing, wood grain style figure across the surface.
It works as an inlay or as a full band, and it sits in an interesting middle ground: quieter than meteorite, warmer than carbon fiber, and more unusual than gold. Damascus steel behaves similarly, with its own family of patterns. Check out the mokume gane collection if the exotic materials feel like too much and a plain band feels like too little.
Placement matters as much as the material.
The same inlay reads completely differently depending on where it sits. Centered is symmetrical and traditional. Off center is subtler and looks intentional without announcing itself. A side or edge inlay hides most of the material until your hand moves. There are also vertical inlays, which run across the band rather than around it. Widths start at 1 mm, and two thin stripes often look better than one wide one. Decide the placement before you fall in love with a material, because it changes everything.
